afterthemill

lifestyle blog from the north of England

About

We live in post industrial times, in a world where even the seasons have started to merge, when the days of northern millworkers are over – so what next? Afterthemill is a northern lifestyle blog for the 21st Century which aims to make some sense of the apparently senseless. Mostly it’s about how to survive the emotional onlslaught of information, global upheaval and how to make a good life as best as we can in our northern homelands.

Day trips out, doing up the back yard, live music, art galleries, meditation and mental health/well being, keeping physically fit, finding good books and new sources of music. Fnding places to go, useful and beautiful objects for the home on a budget, improving our lives. It’s still happening in the UK’s more economically neglected regions. We still exist. We still live and learn.

The author of this blog was born in Lancashire, raised in Bolton, a Sociology undergraduate in Leeds, a newspaper reporter in Northumberland, a trainee manager in Preston, a musician in Clitheroe, an FE tutor in Accrington and an education worker in Newcastle upon Tyne. Manchester is my capital and home city and Liverpool is my northern tourist day out. I’ve done stints at Thresher, HMV, Marks & Spencer, the civil service, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Royal Preston Hospital, the Bolton Metro News…all sorts…since 2005 I’ve been a self employed musician and guitar tutor. The lot.

Writing has always been my first passion along with books, running up hills and playing live music.
